Have you been searching the internet for how to start blogging for money? Well, pump your brakes because you're in the right place! Our detailed guide will show you how to start, monetize, and get traffic to your blog today.

There is no doubt about the earning potential and popularity of blogs even in the time when video content is getting a lot of attention. According to Statistathe number of bloggers in the US is expected to reach a staggering 31.7 million by 2020. So let's see how you can make a blog from scratch.

1. Find a Valuable Niche

One of the most critical steps to take when it comes to starting your blog is to find the niche. And when it comes to finding a niche, the topic you pick should fall into one of these three categories (preferably it would be all three):

  • You have a great deal of knowledge about it.
  • You are passionate about it.
  • You can quickly learn about it.

These are important because you need to provide value to your readers so they can learn something new; you also get more exposure as people share valuable content with their friends. And 94% of people who share posts do it because they think it might be helpful to others. (Source: Ads Pushup)

Now when it comes to deciding a niche, many experts say that you should always follow your passion, and that is great, no doubt about it! But if you want to make money from your blog as well, you should understand that the niche you are passionate about may not have a vast audience.

For instance, if you are passionate about postage stamps collection, like many people used to be back in the days, you should understand that there is not a massive audience for this niche. Times have changed, and there are not many people who would love to read about postage stamps. Besides, by writing about postage stamps, you may not be adding value, so you may want to select a niche that is popular and valuable to your audience.

How to Decide on a Niche?

Make sure that the niche you are passionate about has a broad audience and is also something you don't hate, or you will start to lose interest in the long run. If you don't have a niche in mind or if the topic you are passionate about is not very popular, here's how you can find a popular niche:

  • Demand Checking: Firstly, find niches on the internet that are related to your passion or you are interested in learning. For instance, if you find a niche related to health like exercise based orthopedic treatments, search it on Google Trends. It will show you a graph of how this niche has been performing over the past few years. If the trend is right, you can go for it.

  • Content Potential: Secondly, make sure that there are enough topics for you to write in this niche. Ideally, gather 50 to 100 topics to write about initially, and then you can find further ones as you write. You want a lot of material because once you write 24 to 51 blog posts, your blog traffic goes up by 30%. (Source: Traffic Generation Café)

  • Business Opportunities: Everybody wants to know how to write a blog and make money, and there is nothing wrong with this. So make sure that there are earning opportunities in that niche. You can do that by searching a few keywords around your topic. So if you have a niche on orthopedic problems, search keywords like exercises to treat back pain. If you see millions of search results on Google, then it is an indication that people value this niche, and there will be earning opportunities like affiliate offers and third-party advertisements.

You can also use free keyword research tools like SEMrush or Ubersuggest to see search volumes of the keywords in your niche and see if it is a popular one.

2. Choose the Platform

Once you have decided a niche, it is time to get the party started because you have the groundwork laid, and you need to take care of the technical stuff. Now when it comes to CMS or content management systems, or where you are going to put your blog, there are many of them. But the one that sits on the throne is WordPress with a whopping 59.7% active sites on the internet. (Source: Website Setup)

WordPress is straightforward to use, and that's why most people prefer it. So if you are starting, which you likely are, you can go with WordPress. There is another excellent, beginner-friendly platform that is SiteRubix, which is powered by Wealthy Affiliate University that teaches people how to start a blog and make money online with it. So you can check it out as well.

The best part of using SiteRubix is that most of the people at Wealthy Affiliate use it so you can also join its forum and ask any technical questions you may have to get detailed responses. And don't worry, SiteBubix is entirely free, so no need to pay anything.

3. Get Hosting and Domain

Now is the time to get an address for your website that people will be using to visit it. This address is called the domain name like "allsmartmoney.com." So now you have two options, either you can get the free domain name using SiteRubix like "xyz.siterubix.com" or get a cheap domain from reputed companies like NameCheap, GoDaddy.

Now that you have registered your domain, you will need hosting to make your website live on the internet so people can visit it. You can either get free hosting, which you can get from Wealthy Affiliate if you are getting a free domain name from SiteRubix, or you can pay for managed hosting from providers like GoDaddy or Wealthy Affiliate.

Since we are using Wealthy Affiliate as our example, we will stick to it. So you can get a very hosting with tons of FREE features like SSL certificates, privacy protection, unlimited email accounts, premium DNS, and more for just $49 a year. These features usually cost more than $100 from other domain names providers.

And because Wealthy Affiliate is my preferred hosting provider (I use them for this site), you can get an exclusive introductory offer. If you use this link, your first month is only $19! You can cancel any time and even keep your free membership.

4. Choose a Theme and Create Pages

Now to the most straightforward part of building your blog. Whether you choose to go with WordPress.com or Wealthy Affiliate, there are tons of free, visually appealing themes available on both platforms that you can quickly apply to your blog. Make sure to start with a beautiful yet simple to use theme because according to Leonardo da Vinci; Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

You can move on to more feature-filled and complex themes when you learn all the ropes of website customization with time. Also, when selecting your theme, make sure that it is mobile-friendly.

According to MashableGoogle gets over 100 billion searches a month, and more than half of them are from mobile phones. That means that your blog may get half or more of its traffic from a mobile device, so make sure your website has a smooth mobile interface by getting a mobile responsive theme.

Tip: Make sure your theme is SEO friendly as well, so you can get some help in getting ranked on Google.

5. Write Evergreen Articles

Now that we are past the technical stuff, it's time to write a blog post. You can refer to our guide on 'How to write a blog post for beginners' if you want to get detailed instructions and tips on writing an excellent blog post.

Make sure that the 50 to 100 topics you have gathered are all addressing a different problem in your niche and providing the solution to those problems. This will help you write evergreen articles that will be read and shared by your audience for a lifetime.

So, for instance, if your niche is 'treating orthopedic problems with exercise, you can find a topic like '5 yoga positions for back pain' that is targeting a common problem and is also providing its solution.

Though it is helpful to write longer articles, make sure they are high quality as Growth Badger says; 70% of the content marketers prioritize quality over quantity.

6. Post and Promote Constantly

This may be the last part of our guide, but it is not the least. Everyone wants to know how to write a blog and make money, but most of the people are not willing to work for it, don't be most people!

Make sure to create a schedule of posting content and publish articles frequently because blogs that post articles daily get five times more traffic than the blogs that don't. (Source: Social Media Examiner)

Furthermore, promote your blogs over social media networks and also in groups relevant to your niche. This will help you expose your blog to the appropriate audience and start getting some traffic.

Over to You
